Scouting the NBA draft by what actually wins
Draft Detective is a system for figuring out which young players will really be good in the NBA, before they get picked. The twist is simple: most draft talk obsesses over who scores the most, but scoring is a tiny slice of what wins basketball games. Draft Detective grades the whole game instead, the defense, feel, decision-making, and effort that decide careers but never make the highlight reel.

Does he make the right pass, guard his man, move without the ball, compete every possession, and will his game work in the NBA. Draft Detective grades the part underwater.
A highlight reel is the tip of an iceberg. The dunks and threes are the part above the water that everyone sees. But most of what separates a real NBA player from a bust sits underneath, and that is the part I grade.
How it works
For each prospect I grade eight core traits on the same 20-to-80 scale NBA scouts use (50 is an average NBA rotation player), then roll them into three honest answers. Those eight are the fingerprint, the read you can take in at a glance on any player.

The eight are the glance. My full framework runs to fifteen modules, and the deeper ones, historical comparisons, how a player’s game is trending, and how he fits a given team, are the extra layers that go into the detailed written reports I share.
Why it’s worth doing
The draft is more beatable than it looks. I studied more than a thousand draft picks across two decades and found that nearly half of all quality NBA starters were drafted outside the top 14. Good players slip through the cracks every single year.
Nikola Jokic, a multiple-time MVP, was the 41st pick. Finding the next one a round early is the whole game.
How I keep it honest

It is tested, not asserted
I graded sixty real players using only what was known before their careers, then checked whether my grades predicted who panned out. They did, at the accuracy the best public NBA models reach. It is tested, not a hunch.

I know where the value hides
Two decades of draft history show exactly where good players slip through: late in the draft, and especially among big men and wings. Now I know where to point the flashlight.

I check my own work
Two of my grades turned out to predict less than I assumed, so I changed how much I lean on them. I would rather find my own blind spots than defend them.

Every call is on the record
Every prediction gets written down and dated before the results are in. Over time that becomes an honest track record: proof, instead of a story told after the fact.
Who’s behind it
I built Draft Detective as a one-person scouting operation. After fifteen years coaching youth, high school, and college basketball, I turned to the NBA draft, because each year I realized I knew less and less about who these prospects really were. So I started grading them the way the game actually rewards. Every prospect gets graded on tape against the same framework, and the rankings are time-stamped and graded in public, so the record can speak for itself. The goal is simple. Find the players the league overlooks, and be right on the record.
